VCAG Update
Hello all
Please find below the latest update from the VCAG. Much of the meeting was spend reviewing terms of reference and the work of the VCAG – as a result I have been asked to include some questions for you. If you would like to respond to the questions below please do so by replying to this email. Try to keep it to the point and brief! I will then bring the responses to our next VCAG meeting in August for VE to review.
Regarding 2012, I understand the volunteering strategy is written and will be available on the 2012 website shortly so keep an eye out for it if you are interested. VE seem keen for Volunteer Centres to be at the heart of it and appreciate we may need some support to get there. They have therefore included some further questions - again if you would like to respond I will forward the responses on to VE. If anyone would like a full copy of the minutes please get in touch and I will forward them to you.
Best wishes
Charlotte
VCAG Representative South East
Volunteer Centre Advisory Group
Summary of Meeting held on Thursday 12 April 2007
VCAG/NAVCA
Kevin Curley and Mike Martin have accepted the Volunteer Centre Advisory Group’s invitation to attend the November meeting. Rob Jackson, Director of Volunteering Development and Grant Making at Volunteering England, has recently attended the NAVCA Chief Officers Conference to speak about the modernisation of the Volunteer Centre network.
2012
LOCOG’s volunteering strategy will be launched later in the year. Laura Ferguson will represent Volunteering England on a working group looking at recruitment plans for the English regions given her experience building links between sports and volunteering infrastructure bodies. NAVCA have recruited a similar post to Laura’s.
Questions for constituents:
If you knew that key people understood Volunteer Centres were key to the success of the 2012 volunteering programme:
- What does Volunteering England need to do to support you?
- What do you need to do to ensure and enable your involvement?
Annual Review of the Volunteer Centre Advisory Group
An Annual Review has taken place, resulting in slightly revised terms of reference and an amended representative’s role profile. Volunteer Centre Advisory Group members discussed seeking the views of their constituents as to their role and that of the group.
The Vision of the Volunteer Centre Advisory Group is to influence the strategic development of volunteering at a local, sub-regional, regional and national level for the benefit of volunteers and their local communities.
The Volunteer Centre Advisory Group will achieve this vision by:
- advising and informing the work and strategies of VE and its Volunteer Centre members
- representing the interests and needs of Volunteer Centres in delivering the six core functions of volunteering infrastructure
- acting as a two-way channel for communication and the exchange of ideas, information and good practice between and amongst VE and its Volunteer Centre members
Questions for constituents:
- Are you aware of VCAG and its purpose?
- How can we as Volunteer Centre Advisory Group representatives improve our communication with you?
- Are there issues you would like us as Volunteer Centre Advisory Group representatives to raise with Volunteering England?
- What more would you like to see us doing?
Criminal Records Bureau
Mark Restall presented a briefing and answered questions on the current issues with regard to the vetting and barring scheme. Mark will forward a copy of his report to the VCAG members for comment.
Date of next meeting:
30 August 2007 between 11am and 4pm at MIC, London.

RE: the 2012 Volunteering Strategy - if they haven’t already heard Members should be aware that there are rumours that the draft strategy will be dropped and new one drafted.
It’s unclear why this might happen as the document is not yet in the public domain but LOCOG will be under pressure to produce a new plan for the current Spring 08 deadline.
On the bright side maybe VCs will be asked to contribue?
